Bills Ownership Search: Finding an Owner for the Life Blood of Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills are the lifeblood of Buffalo–and that is no sleight to the Sabres. Without their existence, the city would be in despair, sorrow and there would an emotionless drought for a long time.  The Bills serve to bring fans together, both the diehards who are ready to represent the team as some of the most renowned tailgaters in the NFL, to the more casual fan who at the very least has an idea of what’s going on with the team.

As the Bills search for a new owner continues, fans are hoping for an ownership group to bring pride, rejuvenation and a winning attitude to the city. I believe that with the right leadership and planning we will find them. As a kid growing up, Sunday mornings were a treat not to be taken for granted. I cherished every moment when I went to the games with my dad and whoever decided to tag along with us that week. Buffalo Bills: red, white and blue is in my blood and that will always be a part of me.  We’ve had many great years in Buffalo, many winning seasons, however they are sandwiched with some lean years too, ones we have grown accustomed to.

Buffalo wants an owner that isn’t just buying the team because it’s a great business decision–I’m not sure sports ownership is as savvy a decision as it might seem to be. Buffalo wants an owner who has as much passion as the fans–I suppose that’s true of any fanbase. Bills fans seek an owner who doesn’t interfere with daily operations and allows the executives to do what they are good at–what a novel idea! There are too many owners in the league who interfere with decision-making, feeling they can do whatever they feel like doing. I suppose it’s their prerogative, but that doesn’t make it wise either. Owners such as Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder need to take a step back and let the people they hired do what they are meant to do. I’m concerned that if the Bills get an owner who puts his ego before the team’s well being, we will continue to be a mess for another 14 years.

With the Bills alliance board that consists of people like Thurman Thomas, James Lofton and Billy Shaw, I believe the final ownership decision will be one that is in the best interest of the organization and the WNY area as a whole. They will go through a grueling process and interview each and every single candidate to see if they truly love football–or at least that’s the intent. The one and ONLY thing I will take away from the New England Patriots organization that I respect, is that they ask their draftees if they live and love football. Granted that may seem a question, but it is still one the Alliance Board should ask of every single ownership candidate.

This process, I’m sure, is filled with anxiety, stress and long hours. In the long run it will make all the difference in the world for the longevity and well being of our great team.
