No.1 Seed Serena Williams Ousted by Garbine Muguruza

Defending Champ crashes out in Second Round

Following the first round exit of Number 2 seed Li Na , the second round at the French Open 14  has seen the Number 1 seed Serena Williams crash out as well. Serena, the 2013 champion lost out to the 35th seed Garbine Muguruza in straight sets.

Serena`s usual powerful showing was non-existent as she could come up with just just eight winners and a  plethora of unforced errors (29). The 20-year-old`s powerful baseline showing proved decisive as Serena`s majestic serving game looked to be the very unlikely kink in her armor. Throughout the match Serena could only conjure up  fewer than 50% on first serves and a mere 27% on the second serve on her way to winning just 4 games in the entire match.

Emotions were flying high as Garbine Muguruza celebrated an unforgettable victory while Serena was seen trying her best to hold back the tears. When Serena Williams uttered “nothing really worked” , it summed up a night the 32-year-old American would be looking to forget very soon.

“It was one of those days. You know, you can’t be on every day, and, gosh, I hate to be off during a Grand Slam. It happens, you know. It’s not the end of the world. It is what it is,” said the 32-year-old voicing her frustration.

This win will allow Garbine Muguruza her first third round appearance in Paris, as the 20-year-old Venezuela born will face Anna Schmiedlova in the third round, who came out victor against Venus Williams. Although the fans miss out on witnessing the highly anticipated 3rd round clash of the Williams sisters,  the WTA can happily look forward to the two very promising young talents going against each other on the main stage in Paris.
