As free agency has calmed somewhat, and the NFL draft has come and gone we can look back at a busy offeseason in the league. As OTA’s start around the league, lets take a look at the Washington Redskins offensive depth chart with analysis heading into the start of the position battles.
Washington Redskins Offensive Depth Chart
QB: When Jay Gruden was hired, he stated that Robert Griffin III was his starter and that there would be no quarterback competition. Gruden went even further and said that his worst fear of Griffin is finding out he can do everything. So its safe to say there’s no competition, here. Kirk Cousins also seems a lock for the number two spot. Colt McCoy rounds out the position.
1) Griffin III
2) Cousins
3) McCoy
RB: As I stated in my last article, this is one of the most interesting positions on the roster. Alfred Morris comes in at number one, but the battle for number two is on. Lache Seastrunk has too much upside, elusiveness, and speed for Roy Helu Jr. to keep up with him and I believe he will take over the third down back. Seastrunk also has more fight than Helu and will do what it takes to score, if you don’t believe me watch this video. Darrel Young is a great fullback and inside runner on short yardage situations.
HB:
1) Morris
2) Seastrunk
3) Helu
FB
1) Young
WR: There are so many different possibilities with this position, it is nearly impossible to predict how things will shake out. The top three spots seem locked with DeSean Jackson, Andre Roberts, and Pierre Garcon. However, after that there is a lot of uncertainty and the battle for spots will be fierce. Newcomer Ryan Grant has a good of hands and is a great route runner, and I believe he will be the fourth receiver on the depth chart. Aldrick Robinson has great speed and he can get open, but he needs to work on his route running. Cody Hoffman is a 6’4″ rookie with raw potential and could be put on the practice squad to develop until he’s ready.
1) Garcon
2) Jackson
3) Roberts
4) Grant
5) Robinson
6) Hoffman (Possible practice squad)
TE: The depth chart at the position should stay the same as last year even though Washington drafted a tight end in the seventh round. Jordan Reed is the better receiver, while Niles Paul and Logan Paulson are better blockers, but all three tight ends have versatility.
1) Reed
2) Paul
3) Paulsen
LT: Trent Williams is a Pro Bowler and one of the best left tackles in the game he isn’t going anywhere and with Morgan Moses being drafted in the third if Williams gets hurt Moses can just move from right tackle to left tackle.
1) Williams
2) Moses
LG: The Redskins signed Shawn Lauvao during free agency and he will most likely take over the starting left guard position as Kory Lichtensteiger moves to center. The team also has Josh LeRibeus who we drafted in the third round a couple years ago, and he will continue to be on this team as depth. You also have Spencer Long who was drafted this year in the third round to move over to the left if Lauvao gets hurt.
1) Lauvao
2) LeRibeus
Center: With Will Montgomery released Lichtensteiger moves over to center and will start for the Redskins. Spencer Long can also play center if Lichtensteiger goes down with an injury as he played center at Nebraska as well.
1) Lichtensteiger
2) Long
RG: Last year Chris Chester was struggled, like much of the offensive line and that is the main reason the team drafted Spencer Long. Long should replace Chester as the starting guard with Chester staying on as depth.
1)Long
2)Chester
RT: Tyler Polumbus was the best option for the Redskins last year and because of that Gruden drafted Moses with hopes for him to start. After Rookie mini-camp Gruden said that Moses will not be handed the starting job and still has a lot to learn. With OTA’s, mini camps, and training camp before the season begins, he has the time to learn and should be able to pass Polumbus for the starting spot.
1) Moses
2) Polumbus
