Malcolm Glazer, the American businessman and owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Manchester United has passed away at the age of 85. Under Glazer’s ownership the Bucs would capture their only Super Bowl Championship, and Manchester United would win the 2008 Champions League and five Premier League Titles.
Glazer bought the Buccaneers in 1995 and was seen as a key figure in the team’s rise from the depths of NFL futility. The Buccaneers were a laughing stock prior to Glazer’s ownership, but he would help to build them into a power house with seven playoff appearances, five playoff wins, and winning Super Bowl XXXVII over the Oakland Raiders in January, 2003
The Buccaneers’ official team website wrote that his wife Linda Glazer, along with their five sons and daughter, will continue to own and operate the team.
His ownership of Manchester United, whom he bought in 2005, was more controversial though. Due to the huge amount of debt he placed on the team, Malcolm Glazer has never been fully embraced by the Manchester United fans, and is often seen as a villain at Old Trafford. The immense success of the club under his time as owner has done little if any to stem the controversy.
It is widely expected that the Glazer family will also continue to own an operate Manchester United.
At LWOS, our thoughts and prayers go out to the Glazer family at this time.
