The worst kept secret in football is a secret no longer as Louis Van Gaal has been officially named the new manager of Manchester United. The Red Devils and Van Gaal have agreed to a three-year deal, and he will begin his work at Old Trafford after the World Cup, where he is in charge of the Dutch National Team.
“To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud,” Van Gaal said in a United statement. “This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I’m sure we will make history.”
Van Gaal replaces David Moyes. Moyes’ one and only season at the helm was a disastrous season for Manchester United, as they finished seventh in the Premier League, and did not win a trophy, just one year after running away with the Premier League title in the last year of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012-13. The club recorded many historic records this year, most of the worst ever variety.
Van Gaal will be charged with rebuilding the club and is expected to be given a massive transfer budget this summer as Manchester United look to return to their form as a global power.
“Everyone is very excited about this new phase in the club’s history,” United vice-chairman Ed Woodward said. “His track record of success in winning leagues and cups across Europe throughout his career makes him the perfect choice for us.
“People know him as a larger-than-life character but I have also been extremely impressed by his intelligence, thoughtful approach to the role and his diligence.”
