Jose Fernandez Expected to Have Season-Ending Surgery

Breaking news coming out of the Miami Marlins organization, as they are most likely going to have a very tough road ahead of them. Why? Because, Rookie of the Year pitcher Jose Fernandez is expected to have season-ending elbow surgery.

The news was first reported by Juan Rodriguez of the Sun Sentinel. Rodriguez tweeted that the Marlins are anticipating for Fernandez to have “season-ending elbow surgery.” It was reported earlier today that Fernandez had a right elbow sprain and was going to be put on the disabled list. Now, the situation has become much more serious for Miami. The elbow sprain means that this likely involves some UCL issues, which is never good news for a pitcher, as it often means that Tommy John surgery may be required.

Fernandez’s surgery is going to be a big issue for the Marlins as he is a huge contributor to the team, and the leader of the pitching staff.

His stats at this point in the season are mind-blowing. He is sporting a 4-2 record, with a solid 2.44 earned-run average. His WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) is currently an impressive 0.95. He also leads the NL in strikeouts with 70. He has opposing batters on their heels every single time he steps on the mound, and the Marlins have really enjoyed that production.

From the looks of things however, Fernandez’s season is done. He had a lot of promise and potential this year, especially coming off his ROY performance last season. Miami is currently a team on the rise, which has been a bit of a surprise to all of us. Jose Fernandez will certainly be missed, and Miami now has to find a way to make up for his lost production in some sort of way.

I can guarantee that that will be much easier said, than done.
