The Washington Nationals have placed star outfielder Bryce Harper on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained thumb. Harper jammed this left thumb sliding into third base on a triple in the Nationals game on Friday Night. (Bryce Harper’s Sports Injury Alert Profile)
The Nationals biggest fear is that Harper has ligament damage in his thumb, and the injury could be similar to the one suffered by Angels slugger Josh Hamilton that will keep him out of the lineup for 6-8 weeks. A source told the Washington Post, that “It doesn’t look good” following Harper having an MRI and visiting a hand specialist on Saturday.
Harper is scheduled to see another specialist this week for a second opinion. With the off-days coming up in the Nationals schedule, Harper could miss as few as 10 games, if he is activated on his first day of eligibility, May 11th.
“Hopefully, the 15 days go back and I’ll get back out there,” Harper said. “We’ll see how I feel in 15. … I’m not really worried too much. I’m just trying to get my treatment and see where I’m at.”
“It’s frustrating,” Bryce Harper said. “I want to be out there and help the team every single day. We got a lot of young talent. We got a lot of great guys. Souza is a damn good player. We’ve got a lot of guys coming back also in the next couple weeks.”
The 21-year-old Harper was hitting .289/.352/.422 with one home run and nine RBI in 22 games this season. Last season, Harper hit .274/.368/.486 with 20 home runs and 58 RBIs while missing 31 games with knee bursitis.
Bryce Harper’s roster spot will be taken by Steven Souza Jr., who flew to Washington on Sunday morning to begin his second stint with the team.
