Many people involved and supporting of Norwich City were shocked by the timing of Chris Hughton’s sacking. Some fans believed that a new manager would not be able to make his mark and keep Norwich in the Premier League and some felt that that it was better late than never. I’m siding with the latter argument. Norwich were right to sack Chris Hughton. After a season of lackluster performances and results something had to be done to address the dire situation at the club.
On the pitch Norwich have only managed to score 28 goals in total (as of 35 games played) and a dismal 17 goals at home altogether which has lead to the fans getting frustrated with the management regime. The Canaries being booed off at half and full time has become a regular occurrence and doesn’t help the spirit of the squad. In one of Hughton’s final games in charge he was even hit by several paper clappers which showed the frustration and anger of the crowd.
The argument that Hughton should have been given until the end of the season to turn around Norwich’s fortunes is wrong in my opinion. The club would have continued its downward spiral towards relegation had Hughton stayed on. Since Neil Adams has taken over the reigns at the club the team have regained some belief and desire that has been missing all season. This shows that you don’t need a manager with proven credibility (something Neil Adams doesn’t have) but one that can raise the morale of the club and everyone involved.
Having been to both the Fulham and Liverpool games, the fans were behind their team, singing their hearts out for the first time in a long while. Even though both matches ended in defeat the fans had seen that the team had given their all and deserved something out of both games. Normal protocol for the fans after going a goal down would be to vent their frustration at the players which in turn has a negative effect on them. This no longer happens and now the fans get behind their team even more to will them to victory.
Even if Norwich fail to win any of their remaining games under Neil Adams, the fans and analysts cannot criticise the club’s board for not acting on the situation. The main point from some fans is that Hughton should have been sacked earlier to give his successor more time to stamp his mark on the squad. I have to agree with this point and I believe that Hughton should have been sacked after the 7-0 thrashing from Manchester City which followed a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United in the same week.
You can say what you want about “what has Norwich done to address the situation?” and “Why wasn’t action not taken earlier?” but the fact is that Norwich have acted. That’s all that matters. The new manager has raised spirits around the squad, staff and fans alike and has given Norwich the best chance possible of surviving the drop.
