Earlier today, Major League Baseball handed out suspensions for those players who were involved in the bench clearing brawl during the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates game this past Sunday. For the Brewers, catcher Martin Maldonado is suspended for five games and outfielder Carlos Gomez is suspended for three games. On the Pittsburgh side, outfielder Travis Snider is suspended for two games while catcher Russell Martin is suspended for one game.
As with the game suspensions, all four have been fined an undisclosed amount, though according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Maldonado’s fine was $2,500. While Carlos Gomez is appealing his suspension and will be in the Brewers lineup tonight, Martin Maldonado will begin his five game suspension immediately. As for Snider and Martin, both have appealed their respective suspensions and like Gomez, will be in the Pirates lineup this evening as well.
The whole incident stated when Gomez hit a triple off of Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole. As Gomez reached third base, words were exchanged between Gomez and Cole and what followed was a bench clearing, all-out brawl between the Brewers and Pirates. As players from both teams were converging to the scene, Travis Snider tackled Carlos Gomes while Russell Martin was assisting Snider in the tackle. As Snider got up, Martin Maldonado sucker punched Snider giving Snider a nice shiner on his left eye as well as a cut.
