It has been an excruciating wait for most Astro fans, and today that wait is over. Top outfield prospect George Springer will be in uniform for Wednesday’s game at home against the Kansas City Royals. Springer has been on fire so far this season in Triple A Oklahoma City, slashing to the tune of .353/.459/.647 while chipping in with three home runs, nine runs batted in, nine walks and being 4/4 in stolen bases.
Most game reports and scouts have suggested that Minor league pitchers have been attempting to pitch around and avoid Springer. The young Astros prospect commented on this Monday Night.
“Yeah, it’s just one of those things, as a hitter I’ve got to be smart,” Springer told the Houston Chronicle on Monday in Oklahoma City. “I can’t buy into what they’re trying to do. I have to wait for my pitch to hit, and if it isn’t there, I have to be able to take what they’re giving me.”
Springer, who is a natural center fielder also spoke about the adjustments he will have make while playing right field for the Astros, “The angles are different, the situations are different, the flight of the ball is not as true,” he said Monday. “You don’t necessarily have a clean view because of the shift. … I have to adjust to that.”
Last season Springer hit .303 with 37 home runs and 108 RBIs while splitting time between Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Oklahoma City. He will instantly provide a spark to a Houston Astros team that has failed to provide any offensive punch.
