The Washington Nationals have lost third basemen, Ryan Zimmerman for 6-8 weeks due to a broken thumb he suffered while sliding into second base. Zimmerman suffered the injury during a pick off attempt in a 6-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.
The 29-year-old Zimmerman will be missed greatly in the Nationals clubhouse. He is a team leader and he also is the longest tenured National. Manager Matt Williams chimed in with the following comments about Zimmerman…
“It is what it is. Nobody is going to feel sorry for us. You’ve got to play.”
“It’s a big one, but we don’t have a choice; Gotta go play and compete and win games.”
Following Zimmerman’s injury Anthony Rendon moved from second base to third and Danny Espinosa entered the game at second base.
That will be a chore without Zimmerman who is hitting .364/.405/.636 with three doubles, two homers and six RBI thus far in 2014. He’s also dealing with a debilitating shoulder issue, which hampers his defense, but losing him is definitely a big blow to the Washington offense. Ryan Zimmerman has a career slash line of .286/.353./.478 and has compiled a 34.7 WAR since coming to the big leagues in 2005.
The Nationals have also placed Denard Span on the seven-day disabled list due to a concussion. Jason Werth also sat out of the game with cramping in his groin.
