(Almost) Fish on Sports – Selfie Mania, The end of a GM, and Durant's Streak

The more observant amongst you will have noticed I’m NOT Matt Fish. It’s the accent right? Gives me away every time. I’m filling in for Matt this week, in my role as recovering rugby writer, and moonlighting itinerant. Don’t worry, Matt’s back next week. So, things that have caught my attention recently in major league sport:

MLB:

Well, the MLB season has fired up again, and while most people are happy to let the on field action do the talking, Twitter has been ablaze with another edition of selfie-mania. You’ll all be familiar with the story by now; Seems Boston Red Sox maestro David Ortiz managed to snap a pic of himself with some as yet unsigned rookie named Barack Obama. Obama’s baseball prowess wasn’t really talked about, what WAS discussed shortly after the pic blew up on Twitter was Big Papi having ties to the Samsung company, prompting the office of the President to have some very deep and meaningful discussions with the Samsung company. Personally I think this is all a smoke screen covering the best kept secret of MLB: David Ortiz is in fact Ellen Degeneres.

NFL:

The NFL is looking towards the draft in May, with South Carolina’s Jadevon Clowney being widely supported in the number one draft pick spot. However the big news recently has been around the Eagles and WR DeSean Jackson parting company in less than savory circumstances. The move by the Eagles to release Jackson prompted huge controversy, even inspiring “D-Jac’s” old buddy Richard Sherman to take to the internet, penning a carefully considered and well put together article which remonstrated the Eagles management for apparent double standards and eloquently supported his childhood friend. Scarily, that’s not the joke! I read Sherman’s article, and I have to say I thought it was really well written. I’m not a fan of the guy by any means, but I have to admit what he wrote  really said something to me. Like many other media agencies I’m not willing to be drawn into the alleged off field antics of Jackson, I will say however if the NFL was to seriously look at excluding any player with gang affiliations, a criminal history or a rap sheet…that’d probably leave about what, 12 actual players? Small wonder Carlin Isles – the fastest man in world 7’s – decided to forgo Detroit in favour of playing professional rugby in Scotland…where his only crime so far has been screwing up his first ever professional try in Europe (hey I’m the rugby guy, I had to work a reference in somewhere)

Also, rumours abound that Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs may well be looking to purchase the Buffalo Bills. This news intrigues me for two reasons: One, as a Bruins fan myself it’s interesting to see Jacobs diversifying into new and exciting areas. Two: Again as a Bruins fan, it will give me no end of pleasure to watch as our Resident Bills fan (and massive Canadiens stalwart )Ben Kerr likely explode if the sale goes through (sorry Ben, I had to).

Ok, one last cheap shot…is it just me or does Jeremy Jacobs bear a striking resemblance to Gollum?

NHL:

Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis has come out swinging regarding the poor performance from Vancouver this season, making statements in a recent interview that imply head coach John Torquemada…sorry…Tortorella was not the head coach choice he’d favoured, and his current mind set was an “Either he goes or I go” scenario. Gillis then tipped his milk on the floor, and wouldn’t come out from under the desk until someone gave him his special blankie… it all kind of went downhill from there. Which kind of reflects the Canuck’s whole season.

NBA:

Meanwhile Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant has passed a scoring record of one Michael Jordan after scoring 38 points in the game last Monday against the Phoenix Suns. The good coming out of Durant’s streak is this means that he has joined the rank’s of the sports elite with 41 consecutive 25 plus point games, good for third best in NBA history. Tragically, this will probably cripple Durant’s career, as he will immediately be cast in Space Jam 2, shattering any credibility he has fought so long to develop.
