This is truly the biggest wildcard WWE Championship match we have ever seen at a WrestleMania. We haven’t seen a main event left open wide quite like this in 20 years, since WrestleMania X when Yokozuna had to defend his belt twice in one night. Although, one thing has bugged me a bit, since WWE first announced the stipulation of Daniel Bryan having the chance to enter the title match, Randy Orton and Batista have become afterthoughts.
These are two very credible wrestlers who, between the two of them have held both the WWE and World Heavyweight titles a combined 18 times. Randy Orton’s talents speak for themselves, and while I’ve never been a big Batista fan, I at least respect the fact that he signed a two year deal with WWE. Unlike The Rock, Batista’s sticking around, working house shows as well as TV and PPV, instead of two or three pay-per-views a year. I’m happy that he’s turned heel and feel he works better in that role, I also think the fans have been unfair to him in their quest to see Daniel Bryan as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Orton and Batista are the two most integral parts of this angle heading into WrestleMania XXX because no matter what the outcome of the Triple H vs. Daniel Bryan match, Orton and Batista will be in the title match. They are the two constants, but they have been overshadowed by Daniel Bryan’s fans, which is unfortunate for two men as talented as they are.
As I said in the offset, this is a wildcard match, so I wanted to look at the possible match options one at a time:
Randy Orton (c) vs. Batista vs. Daniel Bryan
Quite possibly the most likely option and the one that the sheep, (Bryan is called “the goat” so calling those who follow him “sheep” just makes sense) it’s the option they would like to see most. Honestly, it would probably be a hell of a match. Orton and Bryan have had several matches in the last 6-7 months, all of which were excellent. While Batista has shown a little bit of ring rust from his four years away from the squared circle, it’s not crippling. All these three would need to do is what they do best. Batista can throw his weight around and be the monster that he has been in the past, Bryan is a house of fire and hands down the fastest one in the match while Orton is the sniper of the match. He strikes when it’s least expected, gets in and gets out. Although, if this were the scheduled match, I would expect Triple H to stick his nose in, trying his best to keep the gold away from Bryan.
Randy Orton (c) vs. Batista vs. Triple H
Contrary to the triple threat with Bryan, this match probably has the least likely chance of happening which is too bad. I understand wanting to send fans home happy, and a world title triple threat at WrestleMania in which three heels fight over the gold wouldn’t be best for business. However, from a pure match standpoint, these three could put on a great show. The three youngest members of Evolution going head to head to head for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, get Flair involved as the emotional centre, not knowing who he’s pulling for, and you have a match with drama and an abundance of talent. Too bad no one wants to see it.
Randy Orton (c) vs. Batista vs. Triple H vs. Daniel Bryan
Anytime there is a situation like this, where the winner of one match gets added to a title match, there’s always the chance for it to become a fatal four way. All it takes is for the Triple H vs Daniel Bryan match to end in a draw for it to end up this way. Or, if WWE wants to build up the drama and give Bryan an even bigger feeling of being the underdog, have him win against Triple H but get beat down after the match to the point that he may not be able to compete in the Championship match. When the title match arrives, Triple H comes to the ring, instead of Bryan, dressed to compete. The match begins as a triple threat, however, within the first couple minutes Bryan emerges from the entrance with trainers trying to hold him back. (similar to Mankind’s return to the Cell at King of the Ring 98) They could even include Brie Bella trying to talk her fiancé out of it to add a touch of reality to the drama. Triple H meets Bryan halfway up the ramp only to be greeted with a kick. Bryan hits the ring and starts lighting up both Orton and Batista. Not only does Bryan come back from a severe beating from earlier in the night, but he has to win two matches in the same night, and the second of said matches he would have to overcome three men.
That scenario might go a little overboard on the underdog routine. After all, not everyone is part of the YES Movement, but a four way match is still possible. The again, in a company that brought us some of the best and worst moments in professional wrestling history, anything is possible.
