Would Chelsea sell Romelu Lukaku to Spurs?

In recent news, there has been speculation that Chelsea and Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku may be on his way to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer. He would fit perfectly in the side and would be loved by the fans but would Chelsea sell him to a London rival? I believe it’s something which will make this summer very interesting in the transfer window.

Chelsea apparently will only consider selling if Spanish forward Diego Costa leaves Atletico Madrid and joins Chelsea for around £30 million. Diego Costa is a close call as to whether he’ll leave or not as he doesn’t really have to leave considering Atletico are top of the La Liga, in the Quarter-Final of the Champions League and with every chance they can find a place in the final four. Why would you want to leave when you’re at a club in this position? However, Chelsea would offer a large sum of money for the forward and could easily give him a wage rise which would turn his head. To play under current Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is now something most players dream of so that may well be a factor. If Diego Costa does join Chelsea, it allows the West London club to sell the Belgian beast. He would be available for roughly £25 million which Tottenham are capable of paying and more than capable of improving his wages. But would Chelsea sell to another London club? That’s the difficulty as some could see they could and others may not.

Chelsea sold to Manchester United in January where Juan Mata left London for Manchester in a deal worth £37million. Selling to a club so big is definitely a risk Mourinho took but he took it as he felt that Manchester United are not a threat to Chelsea. The Lukaku deal may be on the basis that if Mourinho thinks Spurs will threaten Chelsea or not and after this season, he should believe that Tottenham are certainly not a threat to Chelsea. Lukaku said last year while on loan at West Brom that he would not join Tottenham only because the manager in charge was Andre Villas-Boas. Now he is no longer the coach there is a chance he could join. Money wouldn’t be a problem for the Lilywhites but it is all on Mourinho buying his targets and comfortable with selling to a London club. If he does, great!

Lukaku would please many fans and hopefully score goals for fun. But if not, then Tottenham would have to look to other targets and fans will look onto this with some disappointment considering the talent the Belgian has. He is currently on loan at Everton and has been scoring goals all season. He is considering his options now as Mourinho doesn’t really have him in his plans and hasn’t had the greatest time in West London. The other option for Lukaku is to stay at Everton permanently. He could pick Everton over Chelsea or Tottenham as he could be playing Champions League football if they dig in for the rest of this season and pip Arsenal to 4th spot. Furthermore, he is playing under Spaniard Roberto Martinez who clearly loves working with him as he starts every game he can and is playing excellent football which is always delicate and on the floor. With a Champions League spot, Everton would be provided money from achieving this and can be used to spend money to buy Romelu Lukaku on a permament basis.

So, will Chelsea sell to Tottenham where a great talent is available? I wouldn’t keep my hopes up as Chelsea have a history of run-ins with Tottenham when it comes to transfers. I believe it’s unlikely that Diego Costa would leave Atletico Madrid. It would seem unwise to leave when the Spanish club are in the position where they can really make a name for themselves. I believe all of this will make this summer extremely interesting to see what happens between Lukaku and these three English clubs.
