The Ferrari website has recently released the results of a poll posted on www.Ferrari.com which ran for several days. The poll was regarding the new format of Formula 1 and whether the fans liked or disliked it. Backing up Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo in saying that the new F1 is boring are 83% of the 50,000 participants of the poll claiming to be unsatisfied with the new F1. Among the reasons given were that the drivers were forced to let off to save fuel, the noise from the new engine wasn’t as good as the old, as well as confusion regarding some of the new rules.
Taken from the F1 Times Lewis Hamilton seemed to think there was something else bothering Ferrari fans about the new F1. They aren’t winning.
“Di Montezemolo didn’t say a thing when Michael [Schumacher] won those five world championships [in a row],” said Hamilton who won in Malaysia in a dominant fashion. “It’s the same when McLaren won all their championships that they didn’t say anything, and the same with Red Bull when they won, they weren’t saying anything,” he added. “Someone else gets in the lead and they’ll say something. It’s the nature of the game.”
With two Grand Prixs in the books Ferrari has had both cars finish both races but they have not been as competitive as they would’ve liked to have been. Fernando Alonso has been an outside podium threat finishing fourth in each but the speed really hasn’t been there. Ferrari’s other championship calibre driver, Kimi Raikkonen, has been nowhere near the podium, finishing a disappointing seventh and twelfth. The ‘no’ votes in the Ferrari poll dramatically increased after the Malaysian Grand Prix last week, possibly coinciding with the lacklustre performances from each team.
Ferrari will continue to develop the new car as best as they can in the hope of closing the gap to their competitors and start making headway in the championship points. As of now drivers Alonso and Raikkonen are third and ninth in the World Drivers’ Championship and Ferrari sit third in the Constructors’ standings. Whilst part of the team is in Bahrain getting ready for this weekend’s festivities the rest of the team are still in Maranello working away on the F14-T chassis trying to bring it to its maximum potential before the points races are out of reach.
