Novak Djokovic became a four-time winner of the Sony Open in Miami on Sunday, while on the Women’s side Serena Williams won the tournament for the seventh time. The two players continued their dominance on hard courts in the last tourney on the surface for a while. Both the ATP and WTA tours will move to clay court season next week in anticipation of the french open.
Djokovic beat rival Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-3. It was the fourth time that Nadal lost in the finals of Miami, one of the few Masters 1000 Series events he has failed to win in his career. Djokovic dominated the matchup from the outset, facing only one break point (which he saved) in the two set match. His superior serve, and strong forehand left Nadal on his heels all day long. He blasted five aces, won 30 of 35 points on his first serve and had no double faults in the 83-minute contest.
Djokovic didn’t drop a single set in winning at Miami for the fourth time, in a tournament that also included a win over Andy Murray. Despite wins at both Indian Wells and Miami, Djokovic remains the number two ranked player in the world, behind Nadal.
Meanwhile, the top ranked women’s player, Serena Williams had a tougher time in the finals, but still earned the victory over Li Na. She struggled early, and even fell behind 5-2 and was forced to save a set point in the first set (at 5-4), before storming back to take the next five games and win the set 7-5. She would take 11 of 12 games overall and win the second set in dominating fashion 6-1.
“At that moment I felt like I had nothing to lose,” Williams said. “I just was able to relax. Whenever I relax, I enjoy myself.”
Williams has won 11 of 12 career matchups with Na, and it seems like she will continue her reign as the top ranked women’s player for quite some time.
