In just two weeks’ time, the WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be over and the world will turn their attention to the Mercedes-Benz Superdrome in anticipation.
The night before Wrestlemania has always been a chance to look back at some of the great things WWE have achieved over the years and to thank those who have seen and helped the company go from strength to strength.
This year is no different as another group of former superstars and a celebrity step into the spotlight and pick up their long awaited Hall of Fame ring. For me, some have waited a lot longer than others.
Amy “Lita” Dumas is a former four time Womens Champion, and one of the most recognised divas of the attitude era. She accomplished so much in her stint with WWE but it’s the affair with Edge that most fans remember her for.
She was made the victim of taunts and abuse following the real life altercation between herself and former boyfriend Matt Hardy. But still Lita stood firm and allowed her wrestling to do the talking. Even after she was made the brunt of jokes by the likes of John Cena and Jim Duggan but this never fazed her.
The women’s division of the 90’s was dominated by just two women, Lita and Trish Stratus, Lita was innovative and pulled off moves never seen performed by a diva.
One of their best remembered matches was when Chris Jericho and Christian teamed up against them, and whilst the women lost, they put up a better fight than anyone would ever have realised. This made people sit up and notice that these women were not to be messed with.
Whilst Trish went down the competitive route becoming a seven time women’s champion and picking up the coveted Diva of the Decade award, she was always going to find her way into the class of the best in history, following her retirement in 2006.
The two were good friends backstage and Trish and Lita had their final showdown in Trish’s last match at Unforgiven, live in front of her home town fans. The two women put on a masterpiece of a match with Trish winning here record seventh women’s title at Lita’s expense before walking away from the company.
It seemed their era was over and Lita never fully found her way back on track after Trish left, she won the women’s title tournament for her fourth title and announced that merely month after Trish’s retirement, she would also be walking away from the company.
Her final match took place at Survivor Series 2006 as she battled long time foe Mickie James with the latter walking away with the title, but Lita left in her own blaze of glory and has also made several appearances since.
One of which was when she returned with the legends to beat up Heath Slater when he decided to run his mouth about them. She performed her infamous moon-sault finisher on him before securing the win.
It has been eight years since two of the greatest female wrestlers WWE have ever had walked away and when Trish was finally inducted just last year, many felt that Lita’s time had to be near and luckily WWE have stepped up this year and decided that one of the most unique and underrated divas of any era can finally take her place where she belongs, with the immortals of WWE history.
