Formula 1 Engines Just Don't Sound the Same

Wow one race down seventeen to go!

I did enjoy the first race despite British fan favorite Lewis Hamilton stopping early on with an engine issue, putting this to the back of my mind and sitting back down on the sofa (Grumpily) I continued to watch the race. Quietly as it was still very early hours in Europe! This was hard as I couldn’t hear much engine noise. At first I thought this was my hearing or that I had the volume way too low but it soon, dawned on me that despite the engines being on full power the sound was more than a little disappointing! As my young son pointed out “mum makes more noise with the vacuum cleaner” he wasn’t too far wrong. Although I quite liked the tones of the turbo wheezing & the electrical cackling, it just wasn’t loud enough.

The old V8 era is well & truly over & it’s left us with a much greener more efficient & relevant formula but in truth it has also taken away the sound that it has been synonymous for the last decade or so of the Formula 1 engines.

To make up of this the drivers will have to make some BRrr BRrrr Naa Naaa Naa sound as all of us motor sports fans do as we speed away from the traffic lights! Admit it we all do! The only plus I can garner from the lack of noise is that you can hear the Pitt to driver radio clear as a bell! The TV company’s are going to have to be super quick with their bleep button!

I’m not the only one complaining about the lack of noise even Bernie ‘the ring master’ Ecclestone himself has complained & my twitter feed has been full of negative comments.

The good news is it should surely be an easy fix, as many a young boy racer has added a little something to there exhaust to make the smallest of engines sound like a beast! My particular favourite was the Cherry bomb! It gave a nice fruity sound.

If any of the F1 teams are still struggling with the sound, may I suggest a small vacuum cleaner attachment, you know the one that gets into the corners.

The next race is Malaysia on the weekend of the 28th – 30th March. Enjoy!
