As the free agent wide receiver market gets smaller and smaller by the minute, we can expect immediate big name signings. Via NFL Network’s Albert Breer, the Giants reunited with former 49ers WR Mario Manningham, who won a Super Bowl with the Giants, fto a one-year deal.
Manningham, 27, spent two seasons with the 49ers after being leaving the Giants as a free agent in 2012. With the club, his stats have gone down drastically due to injury, only playing six games in 2013.
Manningham has proven reliable for the Giants in his prime with the team. In his last three years with the club, he made 156 receptions for 2,289 yards and 17 touchdowns. In the 2011 postseason, he caught 13 receptions for 189 yards and three touchdowns.
Most famously, Manningham made a spectacular sideline catch in the closing minutes of Super Bowl XLVI to help lead the Giants to another Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. It’s obvious he’s a fan favorite in the Big Apple.
There’s no guarantee Manningham will return to the type of receiver he’s capable of being, but a one-year deal doesn’t seem to carry a lot of risk right now. The Giants have done especially well in free agency, filling a number of major holes, and adding some real weapons on both sides of the ball.
