Big-Spending Giants Add Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to Augment Corner Spot

For a guy who put clocks in the locker room counting down to the playoffs, Jerry Reese is spending like his job like his job is on the line.

The veteran GM made another big splash in what has become a very busy free-agency season for the Big Blue, as he solved the cornerback position in a big way. Reese signed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to a huge five year, $35 million deal, after striking out on the biggest corner fish on the market, Alterraun Verner, who signed with the Buccaneers. (The Giants did not make a strong push, if any, for Darrelle Revis.)

The Giants had to fend off their MetLife co-tenants Jets for his services. The Giants had been looking for a corner to pair with incumbent Prince Amukamara after Corey Webster fell out of favor after an awful 2013 season. Terrell Thomas has lost a step or five after battling through multiple ACL surgeries.

Rodgers-Cromartie, a former Cardinal, Eagle and Bronco has struggled to stick in one place, but the Giants like his speed. This has been an ingredient that has been severely lacking in recent seasons due to Webster and Thomas never being burners. With the speed of receivers in Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington, the Giants needed to find another corner who could match up and spent top dollar for it.

It does stand to wonder that after being shipped off twice if the Tennessee State product is worth $7 million a season, but the need to get younger is evident, and Rodgers-Cromartie is just entering his prime.

The Giants signed former Seahawks cornerback Walter Thurmond earlier this week with a one-year, $3.5 million deal.

Later in the day, the Giants added return man Trindon Holliday on a one-year deal.
