Athleticism: A+
Outstanding range from the linebacker position. Can cut off runs outside before they get to the sideline from the opposite side of the field. Fluid mover and can knife through small spaces. Good change of direction and closes in a hurry. Hustles in pursuit and can chase down wide receivers.
Power: C-
Excellent run instincts and sets up shop behind the line of scrimmage on a regular basis. Capable of shooting gaps with ease, but gets velcroed to too many blocks at the second level. Needs to show more hand fight, as blockers get their hands all over him with little resistance. Has to make tackles while still getting manhandled. Lacks bulk strength and relies more on athleticism.
Technique: C
Is a rather mediocre tackler in light of his numbers. Comes in out of control and needs to stay balanced when making the tackle. Can wrap up his target but will struggle to get the ballcarrier to the ground. Often the first man to make contact, but requires help finishing the tackle. Can deliver some pop on contact, but is not a physical tackler. Adept at stripping the ball.
Third-Down: B+
Excels at shooting gaps and putting pressure on the QB. Needs to be schemed free to do so and is not a 34 edge rusher at this point. Flashes some pass rush moves, but is primarily an upfield speed rusher at this point. Has all the tools to play coverage in the NFL. Plays better in zone, than man, as he is more smooth than explosive in his change of direction.
Intangibles: A-
Has great vision and instincts to make impact plays. Plays with a lot of effort and has strong football character. Two year starter who still made a big impact as true freshman, despite only starting three games. First-team All-American in 2013, and finalist for several national awards. Brings a lot versatility.
Red Flags: None
Bottom Line: Shazier is one of the better pure athletes in this year’s defensive class, and offers versatility to appeal to almost any team. He’s an impact run defender who is a plus player in coverage and rushing the passer. Shazier’s best fit will come playing on the weak-side in a 43, or manning an inside spot in a 34.
Comparison: Daryl Washington
Grade: 9.0 (Late 1st Round Talent)
