Athleticism: A

Shows effortless range to get to the sideline. Explodes upfield and can accelerate in one step. Closes on the ballcarrier in a flash. Smooth mover and easily changes direction. Flashed excellent burst off the line in 2013 and was usually the first man moving in pass rush situations. Excellent pursuit angles, speed, and effort.

Power: D-

Lacks the power to play with his hand in the ground as he did his senior year. Lacks any kind of anchor and is easily pushed around controlled by blockers. Has trouble disengaging from running back blocks. Relies on his ability to avoid blocks to make an impact in the run game. Has the agility to slip blocks and make the tackle when run at. Tentative to make contact when playing from the linebacker spot.

Technique: B-

Reliable wrap tackler. Is not overly physical and does not bring much pop on contact. Has to drag his man down and does not bring his hips and follow through. Could struggle to take down bigger backs at the next level, and usually needs help to bring down the ballcarrier.

Third-Down: C+

Enough pass rush ability to be an occasional blitzer but does not project as an edge rusher. Relies too much on his athleticism to get into the backfield. Lacks moves to disengage. Ineffective spin move and does not work his hands enough to slip under blocks. At his best in coverage and can drop quickly, however, is more upside than ability at this point. Moves like a big safety but needs to show more awareness and not let receivers get behind him. Lacks physicality in coverage.

Intangibles: B-

Does not always trust what he sees, but generally knows where the play is and how to get to the ballcarrier. Gives solid effort. Has special teams experience. Production suffered his senior year, due largely in part to playing a role in which he was overmatched and in position to make as many tackles. Used primarily as a rush end in 2013 and will have to convert back to linebacker in the NFL.

Red Flags: None

Bottom Line: Jones is a player that’s tough to evaluate, as he has played so many different roles for the Seminoles, and played in a defensive scheme that has not been the best when it comes to grooming NFL talent. While Jones has experience playing the run, rushing the passer, and dropping into coverage, he is very average at each, and could be a long-term project. Fits best in a versatile defense where he can be schemed open and contribute situationally.

Comparison: Phillip Wheeler

Grade: 7.8 (4th Round)
