Athleticism: A
Excellent athletic ability. Ranges to the sideline and has very good playing speed despite mediocre instincts. Fluid hips and can change directions and move laterally with ease. Accelerates well and can close. Explodes forward off the snap. Good pursuit player from behind.
Power: C-
Can take too long to get off of blocks. Has excellent upper body strength in the weight room, but does not translate to the field. Overpursues and can run right past the play. Will also commit to the inside only to have the ballcarrier cut outside moments later. Shuffles his feet too much waiting for the play to develop and has trouble making an impact by staying on one spot.
Technique: C+
Plays on his heels and does not tackle with power or drive through the ballcarrier. Content to just lower his shoulder and too eager to make a big hit rather than get his man to the ground. Active hand use and strong upper body. Takes on blocks too high and needs to play with better overall leverage.
Third-Down: C+
Can hesitate in zone which allows receivers to get past him vertically. Excellent range in coverage and can defend most anyone thrown his way if he can recognize what he sees. Fluid and agile to stay with his man and plays well with defenders in front of him. Explosive movement going forward and can threaten as a pass rusher but has yet to proven anything more than an occasional pressure rusher.
Intangibles: C-
Lacks football instincts and vision. Too often gets himself out of position and has struggled to make plays as a result. Needs a lot of polish, and has been a disappointment to date. Only played one full season in 2011 before transferring from Penn State. Redshirted in 2012 due to knee surgery. Career underachiever and might lack the drive to make himself a better pro.
Red Flags: Durability Concerns, Work Ethic, Underachiever
Bottom Line: Fortt jumps out as a size-strength-speed prospect, but lacks the in between traits that make a football player. Though possessing a high upside and skill set that translates well to a run-and-hit defense, it’s hard project him as a starter given his lack of production on film. Ultimately I doubt he will live up to his grade here and could fail to earn a second contract and regret declaring early.
Comparison: Jamie Collins
Grade: 7.5 (5th Round)
