Packers Sign Sam Shields to a Four-Year Contract

One of the best free-agent corners has been taken off the market just three days before the official opening of NFL free agency.  The Packers have re-signed corner Sam Shields to a four-year contract worth $39 million.

According to Mike Florio of ProfootballTalk, Shields will receive a $12.5 million signing bonus, and his 2014 compensation is $15 million. Smith will make a total of $30 million by the end of the 2016 season.

The 26-year-old Shields recorded 61 tackles, 16 pass defenses and four interceptions in 2013.

In only three years as a pro he has 163 career tackles and 13 interceptions under his belt. In the 2011 NFC Divisional Championship game against the Chicago Bears, Shields intercepted a pass from Bears quarterback Caleb Hanie in the last minute of game clinching the victory that sent Packers to the Superbowl XLV. He also had two interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble in the NFC Divisional playoffs that year, which made him the first and only NFL rookie to do so in a playoff game, and just the fifth player in to do so since the NFL started tracking sacks as an official stat.
