Athleticism: B
Is a good athlete. Does not have the range that his timed speed would indicate. Would benefit from giving more effort. Sinks his hips and changes direction efficiently. Is quick but lacks the exceptional burst of an ace cover linebacker, or a pass rusher.
Power: D
Has a finesse mentality. Does not take on many blocks willingly. Is not a fit for a 34 scheme at this time given his inability to play with power and physicality. Will dodge and run around blocks which takes him out of the play. Needs to protect his knees better from cut blocks.
Technique: C
Leaks yardage after contact. Will lower his shoulder to deliver a big hit, but is not a physical tackler. Needs to tackle with better leverage and wrap more effectively. Needs better hand use if he is going to disengage from the blocks with more consistency.
Third-Down: B
Was matched up with running backs, inside receivers, and tight ends in coverage. Drops into zones and plays his man with a fair amount of success. Can get his hands on passes in coverage, but did not record an interception in his career, despite the amount of playing time in coverage. Was used on the blitz, but does not have the explosion to beat blockers to the edge, nor the power defeat blocks. Does not get his hands up to bat down passes when he has a lane to the QB.
Intangibles: B-
Plays without a sense of urgency and only gives effort when he wants to. Stands around and observes teammates making tackles rather than getting in on the action. Jogs to the play. Played primarily as a weak-side linebacker at LSU. Only a two year starter, but a four year contributor. Waited his time behind a loaded Tiger defense.
Red Flags: Work Ethic
Bottom Line: A disappointing player to evaluate, Barrow possesses some athletic tools, but the light has yet to come on for him. Barrows lack of effort on the field is concerning and will not endear him to front offices or coaching staffs. Solely a WLB in a 43 defense right now, Barrow could struggle to be anything more than a reserve if he doesn’t ratchet up his intensity level.
Comparison: Nigel Bradham
Grade: 7.4 (5th Round)
