Athleticism: A
One of the best pure athletes at the position. Has wide receiver speed and is troublesome for FCS talent to contain. Accelerates quickly out of his stance and breaks and was able to burn the entire Tennessee tech defense for a long touchdown in 2013. Is a smooth mover after the catch and is capable of picking up additional yardage. Good balance with the ball in his hands and is tough to bring down.
Hands: B
Has good hands and ball skills. Does not have an overly large catching radius. Good ability in the red zone to make himself a target. Has to fight for the ball when it’s in his vicinity and not let defenders outplay him for the ball. Needs to be more alert for the ball and improve his concentration with the ball.
Technique: C+
Unrefined route runner. Does not give full effort in his routes and seems to coast by on natural talent. Appears lackadaisical at times, but can separate and get open when he wants to. Quick out of his stance in the passing game and will put his man on his heels. Tough enough to get off press from FCS-level defenders.
Blocking: F
Offers next to nothing as a blocker. Does not have good strength, technique, or willingness blocking. Gets put on skates when in pass pro. Does not get movement in the run game and is easily shed and rocked backwards.
Intangibles: D-
Transferred from the Florida program following domestic battery charges. Only significant playing time came while he was at Tennessee State. Was productive at the FCS level. Is a very raw athlete. Did not play with much effort or awareness on the field.
Red Flags: Character Concerns, Raw Talent, Level of Competition
Bottom Line: Leonard has some obvious red flags, but his talent and athleticism is hard to ignore on film. He is a raw talent and will likely require a year or two on a practice squad in order to refine his game and gain the trust of coaches. Leonard is a true vertical threat and could be split out in the red zone. While he can be used in a variety of ways, he is always limited in what he can do as a tight end.
Comparison: Jordan Reed
Grade: 7.5 (5th Round)
