Big Blue Update: New Giants OC Wants "An Identity"; More Notes

McAdoo Speaks: New Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo is still getting used to his surroundings, but he is wasting no time in making sure that Eli Manning and the rest of the offense familiar with his system.

McAdoo spoke to the Giants media for the first time this morning.

“We’re going to be an offense that will have an identity. We want to be sound, tough and smart. We’re going to be committed to discipline and poise, and at the end of the day, we’re going to hang our hat on fundamentals.”

McAdoo also said that his scheme is intended to be a blend of former offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride’s foundation mixed with some concepts Green Bay’s explosive West Coast-flavored offense. Lofty words, but McAdoo expects Eli Manning to be able to make the engine go, as it will be tailored to his strengths. McAdoo says that it all begins with the aforementioned fundamentals, as well as limiting turnovers.

“First and foremost, we hang our hat on fundamentals,” he said. “That’s going to be the focal point. The second thing is we want to take care of the football. Taking care of the football is the biggest thing in terms of winning and losing games. Fundamentals will help you there.”

McAdoo’s quotes bear credence to the fact that the Giants shot themselves in the foot too often last year. McAdoo intends to make sure that those mistakes cannot happen this season.

Snee and Baas Asked to Take Pay Cuts: The Giants offensive line was by and large the root of everything that went wrong last year. Now, the Giants are intending to take a little out of the o-line’s pockets.

Chris Snee, of course, is Tom Coughlin’s son in-law. He has already said he’d take the pay cut to stay. The Giants would love to have him back, because he is far and away the best lineman they have when he’s healthy. Baas, however, has not responded to the request. Baas also has been a major disappointment since coming over from the 49ers in 2011. Should he not agree to the reduction, he would almost assuredly be let go.

But with a litany of holes elsewhere and salary cap problems to go with it, if the Giants would like to keep their experience and hope they bounce back in 2014. If not, the rebuilding of the leaky offensive line continues, and Eli’s nerves will continue to be frayed.

Giants and Bills in the Hall of Fame Game: The Giants will get a head start on their summer evaluations as they will play at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio (20 minutes from your humble informant’s hometown, by the way) on August 3.
