The NFL’s annual meat market is on in Indianapolis. While coaches, scouts and medical personnel evaluate, poke and prod the next crop of players, the Giants took care of one order of business while seeing one of their players align himself with a music super-duper-star who has a knack for making sure his clients get their paydays.
Combine Giants Notes: Coughlin Signs Extension; Nicks Signs With Jay-Z
Coughlin Still Has Some Juice Left: Amidst the comings and goings within the Giants coaching staff, the Giants were adamant that their coach wasn’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future. On Friday, they made good on that promise, signing Tom Coughlin to a one-year extension that will keep him at the helm until 2015.
“Well the Giants have always done that,” Coughlin said this morning in Indianapolis. “That was always indicated to me. I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to it, to be honest with you. We’ve had a lot of work going on in our business and our building, as you know. So I had great confidence that it would happen, and it did.”
Jay-Z Makes Money, Nicks Wants Money, So…: If you’re Jay-Z, you can do no wrong. Musically, you’re going to sell out every seat in an arena. You’re married to one of the most beautiful women on earth. You’re a minority owner of the Brooklyn Nets (which hasn’t panned out so well this year, but you win some lose some) and now, you are an up-and-coming agent for sport superstars, fresh off of a $240 million deal with the Mariners for Robinson Cano.
It’s no small wonder that athletes now trust Roc Nation Sports as the preeminent agency, where image means almost equally as much as the dollars.
There is one card that the Giants can try to play. If the Giants want him back, they may have a recruiter in Victor Cruz, who is also represented by Roc Nation. Cruz even went on record last week pleading for Nicks to stay. But with a tough salary cap hole to dig out of, along with the news today that the Giants will likely not ask Eli Manning to restructure his monstrous $20.4 cap hit, it still seems highly unlikely that Nicks is going to be back.
