2014 NFL Draft: Aaron Murray Scouting Report
Arm: C-
Shows a good arm, considering his stature. Throws a good spiral, but does not get enough RPMs on the ball to make tough sideline throws. Has an adequate release, but is not a point of strength. Will have to dip his arm and rotate his shoulder on some throws in order to get enough zip and arm into it. His height and release could lead to a number of tipped passes at the line, something which cropped with the Bulldogs at times.
Accuracy: B
General accuracy is very good, especially short. Will put the ball on his receiver’s numbers. Has okay deep accuracy, able to throw it in the vicinity of his man, but does not convert those throws nearly enough. Tends to underthrow the deep ball. Throws with excellent touch, and receivers had an easy time of catching the ball. Bread and butter is the back-shoulder throw. Anticipation is hot and cold. Shows he can put the ball where his receiver is going to be, but will too often throw the ball to where his receiver was. Has good footwork. Does not throw off his back foot, and makes sure to set his feet when throwing in the pocket.
Athleticism: C+
Is a good mover in the pocket. Knows when he has to take off, and will still look to make the pass. Is not fleet-footed, but is smart and knows what he can do with his feet, and how to take advantage of them. Showed the ability to check down the football with fair accuracy while on the move. Had troubles with fumbling throughout his career. Had several botched snap exchanges early in 2013, and hand size could be an issue.
Intangibles: B+
Shows excellent poise in the pocket, and will keep his eyes downfield even when the rush is on him. Played from the gun a lot, but did take snaps from under center. Was shaky and clearly affected with his decision-making when playing top opponents in big situations. Able to go through progressions, and look of his man. Still will make the occasional ill-advised throw. Is not quite the field general you would expect from a four-year starter in the SEC, but is still better than most at the college level. Ability to see over the line could be an issue for him, as he is only listed at 6’1” (which still has to be checked at the Combine). By all accounts is an intelligent, hard-working leader.
Red Flags: Size, Injury (Left ACL)
Bottom Line: Murray is nothing short of solid, which is both to his credit and a knock against him. He doesn’t “wow” you, but is the type of player you would at least be comfortable with under center. Murray has the skillset to be a good backup at the next level, and will likely warrant some consideration as a developmental starter. Is a strong fit in a West Coast offense.
Comparison: Matt Barkley
Grade: 8.3 (3rd Round)
