Arm: F
Has enough arm to through it to the hashes, but sideline throws could be easily picked at the next level. NFL safeties and corners potentially could feast on throws. Sideline passes, usually come in low, requiring receivers to bend and dive to reel in the ball; indicative of a lack of arm strength. Fastball looks more like a change-up. Despite his lack of height, tipped passes at the line of scrimmage were not an issue. Does not have the quickest release, needing to put effort into most of his throws to compensate for lack of arm strength.
Accuracy: A
Has exceptional short accuracy, generally throwing with his feet set. Shows plenty of touch on all throws and will usually put the ball right into his receivers’ hands, regardless of where his man is. Rarely misses a receiver downfield that isn’t being played tight or interfered with. Stunning deep accuracy considering his lack of an elite arm. Excellent anticipation.
Athleticism: C
Not much of a threat to run. Will slide safely when he does have to take off and run. Did not get sacked much and is able to extend the play when necessary. Just athletic enough to effectively avoid the rush and can reestablish his feet before throwing. Is able to throw on target with his feet moving, but velocity significantly suffers. Has a stout frame, and has shown toughness to take hits and get back up.
Intangibles: B+
Is a very poised player, who does not panic and manages to keep his cool in the pocket. Mainly threw underneath routes and bubble screens, usually not stretching the field with the deep ball, and rarely testing the middle of the field. Smart decision-maker. Most of his interceptions were a result of his receivers not being able to corral the ball. Will be concerns about his ability to see over the line of scrimmage, measuring in at under 6’1½. Took snaps exclusively from the shotgun and the pistol. Competitor and team player.
Red Flags: Size, Level of Competition
Bottom Line: If Fales were half an inch taller and had the arm of an average QB, he would be a surefire first-rounder in my opinion. He has all the tools you look for in terms of accuracy, athleticism, and mental makeup. Any team that drafts him will be banking on the belief that their strength trainer can build his arm up to a pro level. Could be the next coming of Drew Brees, but is such a projection it’s difficult to be confident in that kind of comparison. Is a West Coast/Spread QB.
Comparison: Drew Brees
Grade: 8.1 (3rd Round)
