Arm: C-
Has average arm strength for the NFL. Throws a good spiral with little flutter. Does not have the zip to cut through wind or thread the needle. Winds up when he has to throw the deep ball; better footwork could eliminate his need to do so. Delivery could be higher and quicker.
Accuracy: B-
Has very good short accuracy, and flashes good deep accuracy. Shows off excellent touch on intermediate and deep throws. Will miss high with the football. Again, could improve with better footwork, and setting his feet when throwing.
Athleticism: A-
Has a very lean build. Shows off fluid running motion in the open field. Very quick and accelerates well as a runner. Determined runner, but is able to protect his body at the same time. Able to outrun non-BCS defensive backs. Athletic to leap and corral poor snaps, a skill he needed against Nebraska. Demonstrates very good escapability when pocket is collapsing around him. Fairly effective throwing on the run. Needs to tighten up his grip on the ball, given his proclivity to run.
Intangibles: C
Footwork needs refinement. Has a lot of motion in his back leg when throwing, which suggests he doesn’t drive off of it like he should. Does not generate much momentum through his hips. Took snaps exclusively from the shotgun, often in an empty backfield. Fared very well against top competition, including nearly leading his team back from a deficit against ranked Nebraska early in the season. Does not appear to use the whole field. Occasionally will look off his receiver, but can be too quick to take off and run.
Red Flags: Level of Competition, Frame
Bottom Line: A junior who declared in the wake of his coach being fired, Smith has an intriguing skillset to learn in a West Coast offense. If he can gain strength and tighten up his mechanics, he can become a nice dual-threat option, but could be a bit of a longshot. Could be a CFL or Arena star if his career with the NFL doesn’t pan out, given his abilities.
Comparison: Jake Plummer
Grade: 7.4 (5th Round)
