The Seattle Mariners have signed the last big name free agent reliever, agreeing on a two-year, $14 million contract with right-hander Fernando Rodney. The deal includes incentives which could add another million to its value if Rodney reaches them. The deal is pending a physical.
The 36-year-old Rodney has been the Tampa Bay Rays closer for the last two seasons. He is likely to take over the closer’s role for the Mariners, forcing Danny Farquhar and Tom Wilhelmsen into setup roles.
Last season Rodney had 37 saves in 68 appearances for the Rays. He finished the year with with a 3.38 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 82 strikeouts and 36 walks over 66 2/3 innings.
His best season was in 2012 when he was absolutely dominant and nearly unhittable. He notched 48 saves in 76 appearances with a 0.60 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 76 strikeouts, and 15 walks over 74 2/3 innings. Over his MLB career he has 172 saves, and a 3.73 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.
Rodney is the latest signing in what has been a big offseason splurge for the Mariners. The team also inked second baseman Robinson Cano to a 10-year $240 million mega-deal, and has also added Corey Hart, Logan Morrison and John Buck. Rumors persist that the Mariners will soon be adding free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz to their big spending spree.
