Athleticism: C-
Has above average game speed, which is likely better than he will time at the combine. Lacks above average burst and acceleration, but is a strider who gets better the down the field, the further he goes. Is surprisingly nimble and shifty with his footwork after the catch. A big play threat when given the space or time to get downfield.
Hands: A-
Has good ball skills and can extend, pluck, and grab to reel in the catch. Can highpoint the ball and track passes in the air. Shows the focus to make some fantastic catches, but occasionally will have bad game and droop a few passes he shouldn’t (Auburn 2013). Can make tough catches in traffic and pick up additional yardage.
Technique: C
Is an average route runner. Gets good separation on deep and intermediate routes. Can be contained on short routes where he does not have the burst to uncover. Bounces a lot off the line of scrimmage and getting into his routes which greatly hinders his effectiveness. Uses his body well to get position downfield. Will power through defenders with the ball in his hands. Is a good, but not great blocker.
Intangibles: C+
Has been a factor against SEC competition for three years. Still relatively young, 20, and has plenty of upside. Needs to play with a little more urgency in his routes and while run blocking.
Red Flags: None
Bottom Line: Moncrief is a good player, but might not be a great receiver. He did not have the great year that was expected of him, but the rise of Lavon Treadwell took some of the focus off Moncrief. Most of his flaws can be corrected with coaching and technique work. Could best serve as a possession receiver in a vertical offense.
Comparison: Demaryius Thomas
Grade: 8.7 (2nd Round)
