Wild, Wild, Wrestling Recap: Monday Night Raw (Feb. 3, 2014)

Every week LWOS will bring to you its Wild, Wild, Wrestling Recap examining the good, the bad, and the ugly of professional wrestling.

The Good

The Shield versus The Wyatt Family

Far and away the best aspect of last night’s episode of Monday Night Raw was the continuation of the feud between The Shield and The Wyatt Family. Both sides had the chance to show their prowess in the ring and on the mic. Unsurprisingly Reigns, Rollins, and Ambrose had a superior showing in the squared circle while the boys from the bayou were better in their eerie promo; but in the words of Sean O’Haire, “I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.”

The most exciting thing about this feud is that it isn’t turning into The Shield versus Bray as some might have feared. His cohorts Luke Harper and Erick Rowan were allowed to make their presence felt in the Wyatt’s promo as well. I’m all in on this feud.

Daniel Bryan versus Randy Orton

If I never see another Raw main event between Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton, I will be more than content. That said, while the match-up is stale the two continued to shine in the ring. I have mixed feelings on Orton’s upcoming matches. I’m excited to see him wrestle Cesaro but I might have to change the channel when Orton/Cena comes on. Regardless, a clean main event win for Daniel Bryan is always a good thing.

Emma makes her main roster debut

In a nice callback to both Santino’s WWE debut as well as their tag team match a few months ago on NXT, Emma made her main roster debut in a dance-off against Summer Rae. Not every debut needs to be like The Shield’s. Sometimes the best thing to do is to simply bring a worker into the spot where they can best help the product. That’s exactly what happened here and I’m looking forward to more lighthearted fare from this group.

The Bad

Batista and Alberto Del Rio: Shopping Buddies

Once again, Batista and Alberto Del Rio got into it on Raw, and once again. nobody cared. If the WWE forcing Batista to pander to the crowd before the commercial break isn’t a sign of their plans being shot to hell, I don’t know what is.  Props to these two though for coordinating their outfits beforehand.

Daniel Bryan ends Raw laid out… again.

While Bryan’s match with Orton was an entertaining enough affair, the aftermath was all too familiar. After making the WWE World Heavyweight Champion tap out to the Yes! Lock, Bryan was attacked by Orton and Kane with the latter laying him out with a chokeslam. If this doesn’t end with Bryan leading a #YesMovement of 70,000 strong as Wrestlemania fades to black, none of this makes any sense. It was played out back in October, and it’s even more played out now.

The Ugly

The CM Punk Saga

The WWE has still not made any on-air mention of CM Punk walking out on the company. Many expected that to be the focal point of this week’s show, but the Straight Edge Superstar wasn’t even mentioned (by the WWE, that is). The fans made sure to chant is name from the get go, and if rumors of mass sign confiscations are true, this is only the beginning.

Botches

Last night’s Raw featured two nasty botches. The first came in the tag titles match when Road Dogg decided not to catch Cody Rhodes as he moonsaulted off the top of the steel cage. The second came when Aksana came down knee first on Naomi’s face as she countered a pin attempted. I understand accidents happen, but this just throws fuel on the fire for those like myself who believe the Outlaws need to get out of there fast. As far as Aksana goes, she may prove valuable in a managerial role but she’s clearly demonstrated she’s too much of a liability in the ring.
