Arm: A
Mettenberger has one of the strongest arms in this year’s class. Throws with ideal velocity to hit receivers along the sideline and fit it into tight windows. With many tall QBs, he has long arms and his release is a concern given the time it takes to get rid of the football.
Accuracy: B-
Has better accuracy on intermediate and deep throws than on short passes. Will throw it too low on short passes. Otherwise will tend to throw it too high on deeper throws; will put it where only his receiver can get it on deep throws, can be problematic on intermediate throws as safeties can close on throw if his receiver can’t come up with it (2013 vs. Arkansas). Needs to take some off his short throws, but has good touch otherwise.
Athleticism: D-
Is not a threat to run. Looks a bit stiff and awkward in the pocket. Can step up, but once a D-lineman gets past his blockers he can’t escape the pressure. Will need a good O-line to succeed at the next level.
Intangibles: D+
Makes okay decisions and reads, but certainly has room for improvement. Working with Cam Cameron this past year has certainly helped improve his game. Could have benefitted from a second year with Cameron. Can look downfield without getting flustered, but could realize the situation and throw the ball away more. Only two years as a starter in a run-oriented offense. His dismissal from Georgia is a huge concern.
Red Flags: Character Concerns, ACL Surgery
Bottom Line: Has a lot potential in a vertical offense. His knee could affect his draft as he did not participate in the senior bowl, and likely will not work out at the combine. Few low-character QBs succeed in the NFL, so his history will be heavily scrutinized.
Comparison: Ryan Mallett
Grade: 8.3 (3rd Round)
