Long-time Giant O-Lineman David Diehl Retires

One of the most revered Giants of recent times has decided to step away after an 11-year career.

David Diehl, drafted in the fifth round in the 2003 draft from the University of Illinois, was named to the 2009 Pro Bowl. Diehl was an integral part of the Giants championship success over the past decade, thanks in large part to his versatility. An offensive-tackle by trade, he protected Eli Manning’s blindside for most of his career, but he spent a good portion of his career at both guard positions and right-tackle as well.

“I’ve accomplished everything I could possibly dream of as a football player,” Diehl said. “If in 2003, anyone would have said that Dave Diehl, a fifth-round draft pick out of Illinois, would win two Super Bowls, play in the Pro Bowl and win every single Giant award possible, people would have said you’re crazy. I have a lot to be proud of.”

With his blue-collar work ethic and indomitable willingness to play through a number of injuries throughout his career, he endeared himself to the notoriously fickle Giants fanbase. As the only player who remained under the Jim Fassel regime, Diehl’s locker room presence was unquestioned; he gave everything he could give until he couldn’t.

Said Coach Tom Coughlin: “When I think of David Diehl, what comes to mind is his indomitable spirit. He got the most out of his God-given ability and that’s the best way that you can judge any individual.”

Do not be surprised to see one of the NFL’s TV partners elect to pick up Diehl as an analyst.
