Tim Sherwood: Future of Spurs or Temporary Fix

Tim Sherwood took over Andre Villas Boas as Tottenham Manager in late 2013. The decision to give a year and a half contract to essentially, a manager with no previous Premier League experience was a dubious one. Yet, Tim hasn’t exactly failed so far has he?

Since Sherwood became the new head coach Spurs have been unbeaten in the Premier league. Four wins and a draw against teams that Tottenham were capable of beating, apart from Manchester United away, which was a brilliant result. Do we thank Sherwood for this good run in the league? The squad was built by AVB but his formation was change by Sherwood, who opted for a more traditional 4-4-2 attacking formation.

Would AVB have achieved the same results as Sherwood if he was still in charge? Probably. One big test of Sherwood’s has been against United where we did pick up the three points, but many teams have done that as of late. We should also take into account that AVB did win against United last year. The biggest test of Sherwood’s would be where AVB failed. The terrible losses against Liverpool and Manchester City must be improved on and we should judge whether Sherwood is the right man for the Spurs job perhaps upon these games.

It was quite disappointing to exit out of both domestic cups. It seemed that the Spurs could of had a good chance in either competition, and to lose against West Ham in the Capital One Cup was quite frankly embarrassing. The loss against Arsenal in the FA cup was embarrassment in the way Tottenham played. They simply did not play up to par with Arsenal, and Tim’s tactics were at fault in the first half.

Could Sherwood secure a champions league spot this season? Spurs are only two points off fourth spot, which would of course be a qualifying place. So, yes it can be achievable. There are of course some tough games coming up. Manchester City in two weeks, an inform tricky Hull side and also Everton are no ‘easy’ games. If Spurs get 9 points out of 9, it would be quite a feat and would probably put them in 4th position depending on other results of course.

Spurs fans should put their faith in Sherwood. An ex-Spurs player who knows what it is like to win, after captaining his Blackburn side to the title, is a good candidate for a manager. He has been very successful with the young Spurs players which he deserves great credit for. Perhaps he can take his success with the junior players, to the senior players! Rome was not built in a day, but a few clever signings in this January transfer window could be a major boost to the chance of Champions League for Tottenham.
