The Giants off-season coaching makeover has begun. Gilbride, the Giants offensive coordinator since 2003, decided it was time to step down from the sport he coached for nearly 40 years.
“It’s hard to say, ‘It’s time,’” Gilbride said. “To finally do it, it’s a very unnatural feeling. I’ve been telling my wife (Debbie) for years I was going to do it. She moved back to Rhode Island (where she helps care for a granddaughter when the Gilbrides’ daughter is working), so I’ve been by myself in the hotel for three or four years. I knew this was it and I was going to do it. I finally pulled the trigger. But it’s difficult.”
Gilbride lead the Giants offense to prolific levels in 2007 and 2012, but clearly bottomed out this season. So it bears consideration that this was a gracious option to let Gilbride go out on his own terms. It might have been time to hit the reset button either way.
The Giants are expected to interview former Giants quarterbacks coach and Buccaneers offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan for the vacant OC position.
