F1 Legend Michael Schumacher in Critical Condition – UPDATED

News has come in that Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher is in critical condition after a skiing accident in France. Schumacher had been skiing with his son at the French resort of Meribel when he took a fall and hit his head on a rock. Reports state Schumacher was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, and he was concious when rescuers reached him. However reports about his current condition are sketchy, French television station BFMTV and local paper Le Dauphine Libere reported today the condition of the record seven-time F1 champion had deteriorated. Other sources have stated that while Schumacher has suffered a brain  haemorrhage, it was non life threatening. Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm has advised as much as possible, but has stated “Please understand we cannot release constant information about his health situation

Twitter has immediately lit up with #PrayForMichaelSchumacher already trending world wide. The German Seven time Formula One World champion retired – again- in 2012 after a highly decorated and noteworthy career. It could be argued that Schumacher was one of the most well known F1 drivers of the current generation, and served as the inspiration for fellow German Sebastian Vettel. Schumacher’s career has seen him alligned with some of the biggest teams, including Mercedes, Bennetton, and Ferrari.

At this stage details remain scarce, ESPN and the F1 website are updating as quickly as possible, we will endeavour to keep you updated as well. In the interim all of us at Last Word offer our thoughts and prayers to the Schumacher family and hope for a successful recovery.

UPDATE: News reports from ESPN, F1.com and Associated Press all indicate Schumacher is in a coma following neurosurgery subsequent to the haemorrage. F1.com reports A statement issued by the hospital in which Schumacher is being treated said he had suffered “a severe head injury with coma on arrival, which required neurosurgical intervention immediately.”

Schumacher is being treated at the Grenoble University Hospital Centre and remains listed as critical at this time.
