The New York Knicks beat the Orlando Magic on Monday Night, but the victory may have come at a price as star wingman Carmelo Anthony left the game early in the third quarter with what the team is calling a sprained ankle. He did not return.
Knicks coach Mike Woodson said that he didn’t know the severity of the injury.
“We’re being cautious,” he said. “We’ll evaluate it tomorrow and see where he is. Melo is a tough kid. He doesn’t sit down very often. We’ve just got to wait and see how it feels tomorrow, see where he is, and we’ll go from there.”
The Knicks already had injury issues with Raymond Felton and Metta World Peace also out of the lineup due to injuries. It was thought that Felton would make his return to the lineup on Monday, but he had a setback in the morning shoot around and will need to be re-evalutated.
Felton has been out of the lineup since December 11th with a strained hamstring, but according to Woodson this is a new injury.
“He tweaked his groin,” Woodson said. “We’ll see how it is in the morning when he wakes up after getting treatment tonight.”
At 9-18 on the season, this hasn’t been the season that the Knicks expected after their breakthrough last year. However, playing in the weak Eastern Conference they sit just two games out of the eighth and final playoff spot currently held by the Boston Celtics.
