Who remembers way back to week one when Clay Matthews took out Kaepernick on a late hit out of bounds? Well, that little offense cost him $15,000. Chump change, right? Well, it would appear it was quite off-putting to Clay as he fought back – he appealed to the NFL and our good friend, Roger.
Matthews has shed some light on the outcome of said appeal. His $15,000 fine was reduced in half to $7,500.
And if that weren’t payday enough for him, he had a second fine reduced – to nothing! That roughing the passer call against Nick Foles was trashed, as it was determined he didn’t “lead with his head.” Yeah, no kidding.
My problem isn’t really that he appealed. My issue is that at what point did they look at the video and determine the hit to be dirty enough to warrant a 5-figure slap on the wrist? And what’s more, what does that say about the people who arrived at the decision, only for both fines to have been determined as “wrong”?
