Urban Meyer Thinks the BCS is a "Flawed System"

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has recently expressed his negative opinion of the BCS system, as computer rankings and strength of schedule have previously kept deserving teams from competing in the BCS National Championship game; the way things stand now, it could very well be Meyer’s Buckeyes getting the short end of the stick in this season. When the topic was brought up on Monday, Meyer gave a very brief criticism of the system but made sure that everyone knew that the college football controversy is not going to disappear any time soon.

Meyer said on Monday via ESPN.com, “Without spending much time on it, because it’s not fair to our team for me to spend much time on it, I will say this — I think it’s a flawed system.” He went on to say, “But when you logically think about what the BCS people have done, and which obviously we’re all part of, I think it was great for a while. I think you take an imperfect system and you do the best you can without hosting a playoff… I imagine there’s going to be controversy with the playoffs too, now. It’s not a 64-team playoff; you can only have four guys. What’s that fifth team going to feel like?”

Ohio State plays Indiana at home this weekend and will finish the season with a trip to Ann Arbor to face the Wolverines on November 30th. One more win for the Buckeyes would lock up a place in the Big Ten title game, but will even a 13-0 record be enough to earn them a trip to the Championship? If Alabama and Florida State are also undefeated, don’t bet on it.

However, Urban Meyer was likely correct in his earlier statement- even if a playoff started tomorrow, chances are there would be at least one team left out with a legitimate argument for their inclusion. Right now, with exactly four undefeated teams from automatic qualifier conferences, the picture would be fairly clear. But if one of those teams were to lose, a one-loss team would need to be included, and there are several to choose from. Or does an undefeated MAC (Northern Illinois) or WAC (Fresno State) team get in? Much to the relief of sports journalists and talking heads, the end of the BCS will in no way mean the end of controversy.
