Mid-Week Giants Report: The Other Peyton Signs

Hump day for an 0-6 team is not so peachy. The Giants will, and must, soldier on, and hopefully they’ll get into the W column before we all start questioning the insignificance of this thing called life. Sorry, that was a bit over-dramatic, but man, this is a once-in-a-generation bad team that no one saw coming. And so it goes…

Peyton Hillis Signs: The one-time Madden cover-boy has signed to presumably be Brandon Jacobs’ backup until David Wilson’s neck issue is resolved. The former Bronco, Brown, Chief and Buccaneer has had an undistinguished career since overplaying his cards in a contract dispute with the Browns and has been largely off of the grid for the past few seasons. But the Giants are searching for answers high and low at this point, and if Hillis can only go up from here if he wants to stay in the league.

Twitter Beefs: David Wilson and Rueben Randle engaged in what appears to be some good-natured ribbing through Twitter recently, but without context or the ability to hear voice inflection, it’s easy for Johnny Q. Tweeter to read into things a bit too far. With the two trading barbs that include Randle questioning the severity of Wilson’s spinal stenosis to Wilson poking at Randle’s alleged lack of grasp on the playbook, and fantasy cracks,  it appears that this is just locker room jabs spilling over into the public eye. The problem with this is how Coach Tom Coughlin will react to this, and it probably won’t be met with a dismissive shrug. If there is true animosity between the two players, it’s something that needs to be rectified quickly. And winning is likely a quick and easy way to help them make up.

Strahan’s Football Life: The NFL Network’s wonderful A Football Life profiled the great Michael Strahan and it did not disappoint. His natural charm and affability spilled over as he retold anecdotes from his upbringing with his Army family being stationed in Germany, the culture shock he felt upon returning Stateside for college, his reverence of Lawrence Taylor, his brilliant battles against former Eagle turned Congressman Jon Runyan to the perfect capper on his career with a Super Bowl win, it’s all right there. Whereas so many players have dark periods in their lives, Strahan’s was a story of hard work, natural leadership and just having a ball on the football field or in front of the cameras. If you missed it the first time around, make sure you catch a replay.

Final Word: The Giants will host Adrian Peterson the Vikings on Monday Night Football who are reportedly starting Josh Freeman. With some people now buying into the notion that the Giants could very well be worse than Jacksonville, this may be one of the only times the Giants could steal a win. Despite all reason to believe they won’t get the job done, they’ll take this one, 21-17.
