Another week, another crushing defeat for the New York Football Giants, as they got rolled over by the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-7. The Giants are 0-4 for the first time since 1987.
Different Week and a New Problem Spot: So far through the first three weeks, you could point to a specific area of the team in which was the main reason why the Giants lost. This week was the special teams turn to tilt the balances of a winnable game into the favor of their opponents. Josh Brown missed a field goal that would’ve tied this game at the half, which could’ve been a major morale boost for a Giants team that is completely devoid of mojo.
Despite the missed field goal, the defense played well enough to keep Eli and the mostly-woeful Giants offense within striking distance by picking off Alex Smith twice. But it all ended in a fashion that was very familiar to the Giants and Chiefs coach, Andy Reid.
With the Giants still only down 10-7, the normally very reliable Steve Weatherford channeled his inner Matt Dodge by inexplicably booting a ball straight down the middle of the field in which Dexter McCluster took to the house for an 89-yard return. The Giants never threatened after that.
The Offense is Still a Mess: Can’t protect. Can’t run. Can’t hold onto the ball. Can’t get on the same page. A lot of “can’ts” in here. That’s not a good thing. Tom Coughlin called the playcalling as “throwing darts.” Ugh. Save for a 63-yard strike to Victor Cruz from Eli Manning, the offense did little. Again.
The Defense Did Its Part: The Giants got two turnovers, and got a good deal of pressure on Alex Smith, but his elusiveness proved to be a hidden subplot to the game. Still, the Giants were handed some extra possessions when the game was still completely winnable. Linebacker Spencer Paysinger had the best game of his career as he was all over the field today. Perry Fewell’s guys deserve a nice pat on the back for coming out to play and turning in a strong effort with little help.
Up Next: The Giants will host the Eagles. This could very easily be one of the sole victories on the Giants schedule. Or it could pile on another loss. And at this point, the losses seem far more likely. It’s a tough time to be a fan of the Giants right now. And it’s possible that it’s hard to be a Giant as well.
