Things We Learned In College, Week 4

If this week’s column is a little on the short side, I apologize; I’m going off the highlight shows today because I have family members who aren’t football people and think of Saturdays in September as a time to do things like get married. (For the record, it was a lovely wedding). Anyway…

Things We Learned in College-For the second week in a row, I think the life expectancy of Michigan fans decreased. (Hey, at least UConn is in an AQ conference). For their sake, I hope that the Wolverines have simply been playing to the level of their competition the last two weeks; having watched them against Notre Dame, I think that probably is the case. With conference play starting next week against Minnesota, it would be a good time to stop doing that.

-Credit to UConn as well, they had a good game plan and executed it extremely well for about three quarters.

-Just saw the clip of Florida QB Jeff Driskel getting rolled up on and breaking his lower leg. OUCH. (And ewww). He’s done for the year, which deserves a big OUCH for Gator fans as well.

-In addition to the calls for Mack Brown’s job (although with their win yesterday, those should be quieter this week), Texas now has another issue- QB David Ash has his second head injury in three weeks. He should absolutely sit for a few weeks, at least. I’m wondering if he should have even played yesterday.

-Speaking of coaches downgraded to the warm seat, Lane Kiffin’s USC Trojans held off Utah State. By a field goal.

-Pitt 58, Duke 55? Maybe I had more to drink at the wedding than I thought.

-Maryland 37, West Virginia 0? Yup, definitely had too much to drink.

-Could Fresno State be this year’s BCS buster? Beating Boise State last night- for the second time in twelve years- was a good start. They’ve got a good QB in Derek Carr (yes, he’s David’s brother).

-Kevonte Martin-Manley of Iowa returned back-to-back punts for TD’s against Western Michigan. (I know. It was still impressive).

-Every week I get more excited to see Florida State QB Jameis Winston play against better competition. That kid can play.

-Auburn looks to be improving on their disastrous 2012 season. LSU, however, proved last night to be the superior Tigers. Jeremy Hill is turning into a dominant back. Auburn could. Not. Stop him.
