When the Huge success of the rise and fall of ECW DVD was made aware by WWE in late 2004, WWE decided to put on the ECW One Night Stand Pay Per View.
The main event saw The Sandman and Tommy Dreamer against The Dudley Boys (Bubba Ray and D Von). Tommy Dreamer went through a flaming table to end the match. All of the ECW fans around the world ate it up and so did I. I loved it and almost cried during the opening when Joey Styles was in the middle of the ring. So what went wrong after ECW ONS 2005? As far as I’m concerned nothing then yet.
ECW One Night Stand was soon to happen and go down and ECW was coming back full time WWE had a timeslot opening for them as the third brand (Raw and Smackdown as the original two). ECW: A New Breed Unleashed on SyFy. The problem with WWE’s ECW was Vince McMahon would not stay and keep his nose out of it.
WWE’s relaunch had great talent like CM Punk made his ECW wrestling debut on August 1, 2006 against Justin Credible. The original roster included The Sandman, C.W. Anderson, Balls Mahoney, Mike Knox, Renee Depree, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer, RVD, The Big Show, Kurt Angle and Bobby Lashley to name a hand full. So why did it not work well? First off ECW was taped after or before Smackdown after a few sole attempts. No doubt in my mind ECW should have kept its own taping schedule and only run old ECW towns and arena’s they had run before. By running where they had success it would have been way better and a better opportunity to have worked. It would have had a raw feel to the show and had the hardcore ECW fanbase buy tickets and go to the new ECW tapings and house shows.
Whatever December to Dismember 2006 was, it now is known by far the worst Pay Per View that the WWE has ever held. It was a huge let down to all the fans there and to the fans that got the show on PPV. It sucked. The day ECW truly died in my opinion was when Vince McMahon made himself ECW World champion.
