El Presidente on Arsenal: Financial Fair Play? Give me a Break!

Arsenal legend Ian Wright must be reading my blogs.  On Wednesday I wrote that there was no point buying Luis Suarez without supplementing the team in other key positions with some quality, leadership and physicality.

Iin the Mirror yesterday, Mr Wright said something similar, and by doing so incurred the wrath of many Gooners, who seem to feel that our former goal scoring legend does not have the right to voice any opinions that contradict that of our current dictator.

To add to Wednesday’s piece, I have since read an article by Wenger’s tame media mouthpiece again in the Mirror, stating that Wenger believes his current squad is strong enough to challenge for honours.  When you consider that this is the very same squad that were knocked out of the domestic cups by Bradford and Blackburn respectively, that statement not only defies belief, it’s just deluded arrogance, and an insult to the intelligence of any sane man, woman or child .

This current Arsenal squad finished 20 points behind the champions, and just one point above the old enemy Tottenham “Gareth Bale” Hotspur – can you imagine what could have been!? During the current transfer window, Spurs have so far spent over £50m on Paulhinio, Soldado (awaiting medical clearance – speculation of a failed medical?), and Chadli from F C Twente, to try and improve their chances of passing Arsenal and grabbing that much coveted Champions League place above us and the cash incentives that go with it.

Man City, who finished 2nd 7 points in front of Arsene Wenger’s squad, have revamped their management structure and spent over £100 million in their quest to reclaim the championship and once more earn a credible shot at the Champions League trophy.

In the meantime, Arsenal have brought in Ya YA Sanongo on a free from Auxerre to help us bridge the gaps above us, while we are fighting a rear guard from Liverpool, Spurs and maybe even Everton, all of whom are desperate for Champions League football.

While Wenger was on Sky Sports News smirking with tireless complacency and spouting confidentiality as his reasons for keeping everyone in the dark about the clubs intentions, every Gooner on the planet must have thrown any objects handy at their television screens – save for those who seem to drink his Kool-Aid. The man’s arrogance can only be derived from the knowledge that his job is safe whatever happens on the pitch, as long as the club remains in profit.

When asked about the prospect of the Bale transfer by Sky Sports News, who for same reason seem to have a vested interest in making sure Bale goes to Madrid (bless them, for once), Wenger’s answer was typical.

“How does it fit in with the new Financial fair play rules,” asked the deluded hypocrite , with a smirk .

I would like to know how financial fair play works when a football club manager who has not won a trophy in 8 seasons, and who has signed more foreign deadwood than Group 4 security commands £7m a year salary?  Now is that financial fair play?  Will financial fair play cover Arsenal fans who pay the highest ticket prices in the world, or should ticket prices at the Emirates be index linked to our finishing positions in the league?  Seems a little more fair, that.  Would Arsenal be so complacent about our squad if when we finished 4th again, or maybe 5th, our ticket prices were reduced in accordance to our finishing position?  Is that what you call financial Fair Play, or in Wenger’s warped narcissistic mind, is Fair Play only a weapon of mass delusion?

Wenger also stated that it it not just important to spend money, but important that the money is spent in the right way.  Is this mug having a laugh?  This from a man who signed Andre Santos, Gervinho, Sebastien Squillaci and spent a club record £16 million for Andrei Arshavin.  At least he finally shed our team of the dead weight – I’ll give him that.  Our Club captain who could not get in the team at the end of last season is now out for a further 3 months, leaving Arsenal to start the season with only 2 recognised centre backs.  Injury prone Kieran Gibbs has only Ignacio Monreal as cover, who is himself on the injury list.  If Wenger does trick Roma into signing Gervinho, our tally of transfer revenues will be closing in on the usual £25 million in outgoing sales if you also take into consideration the wages of our outgoing deadwood .

Last season, lowly Norwich came awfully close to singlehandedly derailing our Champions League campaign.  Now they have seen fit to invest over £25m on some new attacking options.  Can we take it for granted that we will be beating teams like them and Swansea, who have also invested wisely?  Has the gap narrowed between fourth and say, tenth?

I am not going to bang on again about who we need to sign or why.  If Wenger can’t see what even Sky Sports NEWS and everyone else can see, than it would be financial fair play for him to just f–k off and save us another £7 million.
