When the Seattle Seahawks traded 1st, 3rd, and 7th round draft picks to the Minnesota Vikings in March, they hoped that the addition of the wide reciever would add a dynamic element to their offence. Now due to a hip injury, there is genuine fear that their big off-season acquisition will not play a single snap for Seattle in 2013.
Harvin is reported to have a torn labrum. Such an injury would normally require surgery, and would likely keep Harvin out of action for most, if not all of the 2013 season. However the Seahawks are reportedly sending Harvin to see noted hip specialist Dr. Bryan Kelly at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where he will receive a second opinion on the surgery.
“If you have hip surgery, it’s a lot longer than the season,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Friday. “Hip surgery, he’s not going to play for the season.”
“We’re going to wait it out and make sure we know what’s going on,” Carroll said. “He was running full-speed a week ago. He was fine. He’s not far away from being back out there. But we need to know the (seriousness) of the injury. And we’ll know that in time.”
“We need to see how he responds (to rehabilitation) and all that, and we need to get all the opinions that we need and make a great decision to take care of him.”
Harvin, was placed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list Thursday because of the injury. Harvin has been feeling hip pain and discomfort since OTAs this spring.
Its a dynamic weapon that the Seahawks will be missing in the 25-year-old Harvin if he is unable to play this season. Playing only nine games last season, and with Minnesota’s unimpressive Christian Ponder throwing him the ball, Harvin still had 62 receptions for 677 yards and 3 touchdowns, he added another 96 yards and a touchdown rushing. In 2011 he had 87 catches for 967 yards and 6 touchdowns. He added another 345 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground.
Harvin is also a dynamic kick returner, as seen by his 5 kick returns for touchdowns since 2009, the most in the NFL.
Durability though has always been the biggest knock on the 5’11” wide receiver and this news does nothing but enhance the reputation that Harvin is injury prone.
