Now that the transfer window has been officially open for a month now, the top six clubs in the English Premier League have been splashing the cash. I welcome you to follow along as I offer timely updates and analysis on the window as it relates to England’s top clubs and their “ins and outs”.
For Manchester United, the transfers have been coming in/out thick and fast. After the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, United’s manager David Moyes has been looking to spend money given by the Glazers to defend their 20th Premier League title. The current English champions have brought in Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela from Uruguayan club Atlético Peñarol for an undisclosed fee rumoured to be around £1.8 million with the potential to rise to around £2.5 million with add-ons. The 20 year-old, who had a two-week trial with the Manchester club at the end of last season, has signed a five-year deal which makes him Moyes’ first signing as manager.
With only one player coming in, so far three players have left. Leaving through retirement was Paul Scholes, who was the club’s maestro since 1993. His departure along with Sir Alex Ferguson’s came as an upset to all football fans, and the two gentleman will not be forgotten in a hurry. Two other players; 20 year-old John Cofie and 21 year-old Reece Brown were both released.
After losing out on target Thiago, a lot of speculation has gone on concerning former Gunner and current Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas. We do know that several offers have been tabled, with the Spanish side claiming “he’s not for sale”. Too bad, he would create very well, and being re-united with RvP at United would seem a match made in heaven. Whether their is a deal to be made remains to be seen, but as of now it’s at a stalemate – or so it seems. Many claim talks are “on-going”, but who knows these days. It may very well be posturing for someone else.
