Let’s start off with The British Bulldog. What a career and run Davey Boy Smith had, starting off in the WWF in the 80s as one half of the The British Bulldogs with the Dynamite Kid, one of the greatest tag teams in history. After a brief hiatus, Davey Boy returned in 1991 for a singles run that was decent but he never had a shot at the WWF World Championship. The Bulldog then moved on to WCW in 1993 to receive two title shots against Big Van Vader in good matches but fell short. He soon returned to the WWF in 1994 and eventually received his best chance at becoming World Champion in a feud with champion Shawn Michaels in consecutive pay per views in 1996 but fell short once again.
Scott Hall was in his prime as Razor Ramon in the WWF. What a talent he was. He had the look, could cut an awesome promo and had the body. And unlike The Ultimate Warrior, he could work and have a great match with anybody back in the 90s. In 1994, Ramon and Shawn Michaels had the first ever pay per view Ladder Match at Wrestlemania X and tore down Madison Square Garden with arguably the best match of the year. He then went on to WCW in 1996 where with Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan started the New World Order. Hall was great and should have had a run in the 90s as World Champion.
“The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase. What a gimmick DiBiase had coming into the WWF back in late 1987. At Wrestlemania IV, DiBiase came very close to becoming WWF World Champion as he was originally picked to go over Macho Man Randy Savage in the World Title Tournament Finals but plans were changed. If you ask me, even if Macho had the talent to be World Champ, he got the strap because he was good friends with Hulk Hogan back then. Anyway, DiBiase had a long career and never got a run as World Champion.
Next is Rowdy Roddy Piper. His shirt once said “ICON” and I agree. This guy left a mark on me in my childhood and growing up watching him? What a legend. Believe it or not, Piper never got a run as WWF World Champion. Hogan and Piper put WWF on the map in the 80s. How I see it, Piper never got a run as WWF World Champion because he left Vince McMahon in 1987 to attempt a run in Hollywood and starred in They Live. I’m glad he did as it was an awesome movie but we lost out on the Hot Rod becoming World Champ.
Last but not least is Arn Anderson. Anderson had it all. He could cut one hell of a promo. He had the look of a guy that could beat you in a bar fight and in the ring as a member of the Four Horsemen. Anderson and Tully Blanchard were two guys that held the Four Horsemen together back in the 80s and then left to the WWF. Arn and Tully had an awesome run as The Brainbusters and were without a doubt one of the best tag teams in the 80s. Anderson went back to WCW and even beat Hulk Hogan on Nitro but never got a run as World Champion after having to retire due to injury in 1997. I don’t really know why he never received his chance as World Champ.
The “Never Been World Champion” list:
Rowdy Roddy Piper
Scott Hall
Arn Anderson
Ted DiBiase
The British Bulldog
Owen Hart
Many of them champions and many of them WWE Hall of Famers but none of them could say they were World Champion. It’s disappointing that some retired and some even passed away without getting a belt they deserved, but I can do nothing but smile and know Owen and Bulldog are having their own matches up in heaven.
